Finding Rhythms Runs Online Music Workshops During Lockdown

The external environment has challenged us to find creative alternatives to our in-person projects, and like other organisations, we have made a concerted effort to engage with young people in any way possible. In July 2020 we were delighted to run a series of online music workshop with students from the Charter School in South London in to engage young people who are stuck at home during lockdown. Our practitioners Aron Kyne, Thabo Mkwananzi and Xidus Pain spoke to the young people about the work we do and the processes behind making music and writing lyrics.
Our three musicians delivered 2 hours of engaging creative workshops to 20 learners, challenging them to create themes for songs and write lyrics. We wanted to use this opportunity to understand some of the experiences and concerns of young people who have had huge disruptions in their day to day lives. We also wanted to get their thoughts on the Black Lives Matter movement and what it means to them – whether they feel it directly impacts them or not.
We want to thank our incredible practitioners. Xidus, Aron and Thabo who facilitated the sessions. Xidus is an acclaimed rapper, Aron is a producer and multi-instrumentalist and Thabo is a singer who has opened up for International stars including Seal.
A teacher from the school told us:
“Aron, Thabo and Xidus were all totally engaging from the start, inviting students into their world and work, and creating an impressively warm and open space. It was especially productive that the musicians shared their experiences of lockdown and encouraged students to do the same”
