Making Waves Live at Peckham Levels

We returned to Peckham Levels on 10th July for the third Making Waves Live, and once again, we sold out the Auditorium. Supporters braved the 30 degree heat to hear original music from artists to come through our Making Waves music and mentoring programme. Thankfully, the air con at held strong.

The night was hosted by our own Thabo Mkwananzi – long time Finding Rhythms facilitator. The artists performing had worked with Thabo in the run up to the gig, thinking about what story they wanted to tell through their set and how they would tell it.

The show opened with a stunning performance of original song, “Sunshine” from singer-songwriter, Johnny Soul, who weaved through the audience as he sang, reaching an astonishing range of notes. He was accompanied by our founder and trustee, Robin Harris on keys.

The night continued with equally entertaining performances from rap artists, AIDAN and Flip100, electric guitarist, Matthew, and spoken word/rap artist Dangerfield Newby, who’s powerful ‘conscious rap’ lyrics were filled with political, cultural, philosophical references and social commentary that left us hanging on every word.

Nessie had the room stunned into silence with her raw and pure vocals and effortlessly emotional performance. Her honest, neosoul track “Inner Peace” is an earworm that hasn’t left our heads since.

Closing the night was Urhighness_Queen.B: a natural performer with a commanding style, she held the room from the start to finish. She ended with an acoustic song, “Follow Me”, joined by FR music facilitator Tom Goss on guitar, and led the audience in a call and response.

Head to our discography to listen to some of these tracks and stay tuned for the release of “Making Waves Vol.5” by following us on Spotify and Bandcamp.
